The Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme is the 2019 recipient of the “Carlos V European Award” , which honors people, organisations, projects or initiatives that contribute “to the enhancement of Europe’s cultural and historical values”. For the first time this prize is awarded to a European programme.

The award is delivered every year by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation during a ceremony on 9 May, on the occasion of Europe Day, presided over by His Majesty the King of Spain at the Royal Monastery of Yuste.

There are currently 33 itineraries certified as “Cultural Itineraries of the Council of Europe” that bring together more than 1600 members from different continents, integrating a total of 61 countries from all over the world.

The Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route extends through five European countries – Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. It is a network of sub-destinations, created around individual archaeological sites, locations, places and buildings, which are monuments to the leadership of the Roman emperors in Late Antiquity. The Route was certified in 2015 as a European Cultural Route by the European Institute for Cultural Routes.
