
Due to the fertile land and moderate climate of Danube Region, the production of numerous kinds of vegetables, fruit and vine has been thriving for centuries. The daily diet in this area consists of locally grown meat and fish, and traditional meals are prepared even today according to the old recipes of grandmothers and grand-grandmothers, for which the most important spice is love! Culinary skills are passed on through the generations, but they are also enriched by the influences of the cuisines of various nations that have resided shortly or for a longer time in this area carried by the whims of tumultuous history. Regardless whether this is Baranja sausage, fish stew, game stew, geese stew or fish perkelt, dumplings, kuglof cake, fresh fish caught in the Danube, fruit brandy, high-quality homemade wines or bermet wine, the magical concoction of tastes and flavors from the Danube region will not leave any visitor indifferent.
In discovering the finest tastes and smells of the Danube region, you will have the opportunity not only to enjoy in preserved nature, but also to take your chance in trying out traditional skills of old trades and learn a verse or two of the music that is said to heal the heart and soul.
Day 1: Welcome drink in Osijek followed by sightseeing of the city center and Osijek Fortress – the first large city in the string of baroque fortified cities on the border of Ottoman Empire. This is followed by a tour of the wine cellar in Erdut, where the largest wooden barrel in the world is kept and is still being used. Dinner with tasting of famous Erdut wines, and overnight stay.
Day 2: After a traditional breakfast, drive to Backi Petrovac the best place to learn about interesting customs of numerous national minorities that have lived in the territory of Vojvodina for centuries. A visit to a traditional broom manufacturing household where you will be able to create your own souvenir. Lunch in a countryside household that has been producing a widely known homemade Slovak sausage for generations. Drive to Sremski Karlovci and accommodation. Tour of the city center with fountain of the Four lions, famous Karlovci Gymnasium, Magistrate, Patriarchate Court and Seminary. Dinner in a wine cellar and degustation of the best local wines. Overnight stay.Â
Day 3: Breakfast. A visit to the Kuglof museum where the group will take part in a gastronomical workshop. Guests will learn how to make delicious homemade dough with poppy and kuglof, a traditional cake from the age of Austro-Hungarian Empire. A visit to a local beekeeping household, where we will hear some interesting facts about bees and taste some of the best local honey. Free time until dinner in a wine cellar and tasting of the local wines. Overnight stay.
Day 4: After breakfast, the group will depart to Novi Sad for a walking tour of the city center – Synagogue, Town Hall, Name of Mary Church, Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska street, Danube park. Drive to Petrovaradin Fortress, walking tour and visit to the underground military galleries. Lunch by the Danube. After lunch, the group departs towards Ilok. Tour of Ilok, a medieval town full of historical sights and a visit to Principovac manor, built for the noble family Odescalchi. Visit to the vineyards of local wineries. Dinner in a winery, wine tasting and overnight stay.
Day 5: After breakfast, departure to Vukovar, sightseeing of baroque city center and Eltz castle complex. A visit to the Vucedol culture Museum with rich collection of artifacts from the Bronze Age. Lunch and return to Osijek. End of programme.
