The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) has announced the Sava Cycle Route as the latest proposed addition to the EuroVelo network. If approved, the 1,136 km route will become EuroVelo 18, linking Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, and connecting the capitals Ljubljana, Zagreb, and Belgrade by bicycle along the Sava River. The route is expected to be formally integrated into the network by 2029, provided it meets the criteria for new EuroVelo routes. This will make it the 19th EuroVelo route and the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The route showcases a wide variety of natural and cultural highlights, from Lake Bled to Lonjsko Polje, and the Bardača and Obedska Bara wetlands, making it a unique cycling experience through Alpine landscapes, riverside towns, and internationally significant wetlands. Coordinated through strong cross-border partnerships among national and regional stakeholders, such as ministries, tourism boards and NGOs, and particularly National EuroVelo Coordination Centres, the project marks a major step in expanding sustainable mobility and cycling tourism in South-Eastern Europe.
